TEAM RECORDS: Golden Eagles (1-2, 1-2 MEC), Battlers (1-2, 1-2 MEC)
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Much like the first two games of the season, the score bounced back and forth between the Golden Eagles and the Battlers. At the initial media timeout in the opening half, Charleston trailed Alderson Broaddus 10-9 behind a strong start from Lamont McManus (6pts, 3-of-3 FG). After forcing two consecutive turnovers out of the timeout, the Golden Eagles took their first lead of the game at 11-10 after seven minutes of play. With their tempo out of the timeout showing an uptick, Charleston was able to involve
Tyler Eberhart into the scoring, as the 6-7 freshman pushed the lead to four.
At the halfway point in the first half, Alderson Broaddus was able to even the score at 15 a piece. For the second time in row out of a media timeout, the Golden Eagles used an upbeat tempo along with outside scoring to push their lead to the largest of the game, five points.
As the half wound to a close, Alderson Broaddus was able to rally back and regain the lead at 30-28 with 3:01 remaining. As lead changes occurred on three of four possessions down the stretch, the teams once again found themselves tied for the eighth time in the game with under one-minute remaining in the frame.
Eight Golden Eagles scored at least one bucket in the first half, with McManus leading the way with 12. For the half, both teams shot 50.0% from the field, with the Battlers holding the advantage from beyond the arc (66.6% compared to 27.3% for Charleston). The rebound battle was nearly even across the board, with Charleston leading 16-15 while David Shriver led all Battlers with 11 points and three rebounds.
Out of the locker room, Charleston used an 10-2 advantage over the first three minutes to stretch their lead to ten. Despite the disadvantage, Alderson Broaddus rattled off seven straight points to cut down their deficit to just three over the next 90 seconds. 71.4% shooting (5-of-7) out of the locker room allowed for the Battlers to remain close coming out of the under-fifteen media timeout. Over the next four minutes of the game, the Golden Eagles were able to extend their lead at 61-55 due to stellar play on the defensive side of the ball. The lead for the Golden Eagles would push to nine with under ten minutes remaining in the ball game.
Coming down the final stretch, great work on both ends of the floor from
Shunta Wilson, who made his first start today as a Golden Eagle allowed Charleston to keep their lead at nine. As the Battlers implemented a full court press over the final four minutes, a nine-point advantage was cut down to three with 2:33 remaining in the contest.
Despite the pressure, the ability to break the press over the final minutes allowed for Charleston to slow down the pace and secure the win, their first of the season.
