GLENVILLE, W.Va. – The University of Charleston Men's and Women's Track & Field teams participated in day one of the MEC Championships held on the campus of Glenville State.
In the men's 10,000-meter race that featured four nationally ranked runners, Charleston's Jack Mastandrea was the winner with a time of meet record time of 30:21.09. Freshman Michael Garrett won the high jump with a mark of 1.95 meters.
Also, in the 10k, Charleston's men placed four runners in the top-10, with David Cecci (31:15.19), Kyle Hinson (31:51.77), and Cameron Lee (32:26.65) all joining Mastandrea to score 19 points for their team.
Mastandrea defended his 10k title from 2019 running 14:40 over the final 5k to pull away for the win.
In the hammer throw, Nathan Stout (53.95m) and Kellen Tropeck (48.05m) both had big days, finishing 2
nd and 5
th respectively. In the high jump, Michael Garrett finished 2
nd with a new school record height of 1.95 meters (6 feet 5 inches).
Fabio Maboudou placed 3
rd with a new PR of 43 meters in the Javelin while in the Decathlon, Andrew Cree is currently in 3rd place after day one and five events. Cree is on PR pace.
On the Women's side, Mercy Jepleting (38:46.51) & Kasey McNamara (39:30.20) finished 2nd & 3rd place in the 10k to earn 14 points for their team.
In the long jump, Carol Burgess had another fantastic day jumping by finishing 3
rd while teammate Miri Dreher placed 7
th.
Louise Cranston had a very strong first day in the Heptathlon and is currently in 2
nd place after day one with 2,498 points.
