Timely Hitting Lifts Seton Hill Past Baseball

GREENSBURG, Pa. - The Golden Eagles pitching staff had a tough test against WVIAC leading and nationally ranked Seton Hill who proved to be as advertised with 24 hits against the youthful University of Charleston staff in taking a double-header sweep, Wednesday afternoon.

Ryan Hathaway (Fredericktown, Ohio) got Charleston (12-13, 4-6) started off on the right note with an upset on their mind by opening the first contest with a single to left field. A walk to Igor Molina (Coral Springs, Fla.) put Hathaway in scoring position before Andrew Stichter (Inglis, Fla.) slapped a single to centerfield to plate Hathaway for the first run of the day.

Two singles and a double in the second inning allowed the Griffins (20-6, 12-2) to knot the game up at one run apiece. Seton Hill broke the game open against starter Patrick Chiaramonte (Pembroke Pines, FL) in the fourth inning with three runs for a 4-1 advantage UC would not recover from.

The University of Charleston put two runs on the board in the top of the fifth on RBI hits from Hathaway and Nick Barnes (Strasburg, Va.), but the comeback became short lived as SHU put two runs of their own on the scoreboard in the bottom half of the inning.

A sacrifice fly for Seton Hill in the sixth put the final touches on the first contest to secure the 7-3 victory.

Molina had a strong performance at the plate with three singles to stay perfect (3-for-3) in the defeat, while Robert Collin (Pembroke Pines, FL) and Hathaway put up 2-for-3 efforts.

Seton Hill put the second game away out of the gate taking a quick 5-0 lead after the first two innings of play.

Hathaway scored the Golden Eagle's first run of the contest on an error by the Griffin centerfielder on a Barnes double to get within 5-1. SHU would go on to score four unanswered runs before the Charleston put a big inning together in their final at-bat.

Facing a 9-1 deficit UC put three runs on the scoreboard in the top of the seventh by taking advantage of a Jordan Kirk (Chapmanville, WV) RBI hit and three Griffin fielding errors.

Dylan Saunders (Chapmanville, WV) suffers the loss on the mound for Charleston, while hot-hitting Ryan Foster (Cincinnati, OH) paced the effort for the Golden Eagles at the plate with a 2-for-3 perfomance in game two.

The Golden Eagles have a quick turnaround to their next WVIAC contest as they travel to Davis & Elkins on Saturday, March 31 for a 1:00 pm doubleheader.
