Golden Eagles Take on Urbana on Wednesday

CHARLESTON, W. Va. – The University of Charleston Basketball teams are set to play on the road this Wednesday against the Blue Knights of Urbana University with tip off scheduled for 5:30 p.m. (Women's) and 7:30 p.m. (Men's) at the Warren G. Grimes Center. Following Wednesday's matchups, the Golden Eagles will return home for a pair of games against Notre Dame College (Saturday, 1/18) and Concord (Wednesday, 1/22).

The University of Charleston Golden Eagles Men's Basketball team (12-2, 6-2 MEC) defeated the Senators of Davis & Elkins College by a score of 91-57 on Saturday afternoon as five Golden Eagles finished the game with double-digit scoring efforts. With the win, Charleston extended their win streak to seven games and hold the top spot in the Mountain East Conference Standings.
 
Junior forward, Lamont McManus scored a team high 17 points, while teammate Devon Robinson notched another double-double with 12 points and 12 boards.

The Golden Eagles jumped to an early lead, going 18-for-24 from the field in the first half, led by Seth O'Neal who scored 12 of his 14 points in the first half. The Golden Eagles led by as many as 22 points before a layup by Keith Williams put Charleston up 44-25 just before the break.

Charleston came out in the second half, maintaining their double-digit lead. Leading by as many as 34 points midway through the half, only to end the game with a 34-point margin of victory.

Charleston's defense forced 13 Senator turnovers, capitalizing with 20 points off those miscues while the Golden Eagles committed six more than their opponents.

The Golden Eagles continue to shoot the ball well and come into Wednesday holding the 3rd highest field goal percentage in the country (52.4%). In addition, the Golden Eagles are ranked 8th in the country in rebound margin (9.6). Devon Robinson leads the MEC in rebounds (140), while McManus leads the conference in field goal percentage (67.9%), good for 5th in the nation.
 
The Blue Knights comes into the contest holding a record of 4-10 (3-5 MEC) after winning their most recent matchup with Frostburg State on Saturday by a score of 72-55. With the win, 1st year head coach of the Urbana, Josh Gibson recorded his 100th career win between Brescia, Lourdes, and Urbana. The Blue Knights had dropped five of their prior six contests before defeating the Bobcats and are currently in the bottom half in the Mountain East Standings.
 
Urbana is led offensively by Jordan Bradley, who averages 12.46 points per contest while pulling down just over two rebounds per contest. Just behind Bradley is Tehree Horn, who on average scores 11.7 points per game while notching just under five rebounds per game.

In their history, the Golden Eagles hold a lopsided advantage over the Blue Knights as the teams have squared off 16 times with Charleston winning each of the contests dating back to 2011. The Golden Eagles largest margin of victory came in their last matchup in January of 2019 as Charleston defeated Urbana 87-58 at home as Seth O'Neal dropped in 17 points.

Women's Basketball Outlook:

The University of Charleston Golden Eagles Women's Basketball team (12-2, 7-1 MEC), increased their win streak to 9 games on Saturday with a 65-53 win over the Senators of Davis & Elkins College. The Golden Eagles used a 27-12 fourth quarter advantage to defeat the Senators behind 14 final quarter points from Senior Anna Hayton, who finished the game with 18 points, seven rebounds, and an assist.
 
The Golden Eagles trailed early, as the Senators held a 7-2 advantage over UC at the 4:30 mark in the first quarter. At the end of the frame, the Golden Eagles trailed 13-6 while shooting just 1-of-14 from the field, converting on 4-of-8 from the charity stripe, and was outrebounded 16-6.
 
Charleston cut into the Senator lead, bringing the score to 15-11 with 7:42 remaining in the quarter and tied the game at 19-19 with just over five minutes remaining in the half. Davis & Elkins fought back, putting together a 10-3 run of their own over the next four minutes before Hayton would be charged with a technical foul in the final minute of the half following a turnover with the Senators leading 29-22. Megan Haines drew a critical foul in the final seconds of play on a made layup and was able to convert the and one to cut the Senator lead to four headed into the break, trailing 29-25.
 
Charleston cut the Davis & Elkins lead to three headed into the final frame after outscoring the opposition 13-12 in the third.
 
The fourth quarter was all in favor of the Golden Eagles, who would outscore D&E 27-12. Hayton was able to lead the way with 14 points in the frame and Charleston forced five turnovers and outscored the Senators 23-8 during the contest in points off turnovers.

The Golden Eagles come into the contest ranking 1st in the MEC in free throws made (250) while converting on 72.7% of attempts, good for 6th in the conference. In addition, Charleston is 1st in the conference in scoring defense, giving up just 60.6 points per game.
 
The Blue Knights come into the contest holding a record of 9-5 (5-3 MEC) after winning their most recent contest on Saturday against Frostburg State by a score of 78-63. Urbana holds a three-game win streak entering Wednesday with their last loss coming to Davis & Elkins on December 14th. Urbana ranks 19th in Division II in scoring offense, averaging 79.7 points per contest and are led offensively by Tyra James, who averages 22.9 ppg while pulling down 9.8 rebounds per contest. The Blue Knights have executed at a high level on offense this season as the team ranks 1st in the MEC in assists per game, averaging 17.3 per contest.

In their matchup history, the Golden Eagles and Blue Knights have squared off 14 times with Charleston holding a 10-4 advantage. The Golden Eagles currently hold a four-game win streak against the opposition with their largest margin of victory coming in their last matchup, a game UC won by a score of 92-63 when Brooklyn Pannell dropped 33 points and Raziyah Farrington dropped her 1,000th career point as a Golden Eagle.
