Golden Eagles Head North on Wednesday to Take on Frostburg State

CHARLESTON, W. Va. – The University of Charleston Basketball teams are set to take on the Bobcats of Frostburg State University on Wednesday evening with tip scheduled for 5:30 p.m. (Women's) and 7:30 p.m. (Men's). Both games will be played on the campus of the Allegany College of Maryland.

The Golden Eagles had their ten-game win streak snapped on Sunday afternoon by the Yellow Jackets of West Virginia State University after dropping a 74-72 decision that came down to the final possession of the contest. Senior forward, Devon Robinson notched his 16th career double-double in the loss tallying 16 points and 16 boards in 35 minutes of play.

The first half of the ball game belonged to Charleston, who led the hosts at the half by a score of 41-37. The Golden Eagles took the early lead until Glen Abram knocked down a three with 11:42 to play to give the Yellow Jackets the 1-point lead. Over the next 11 minutes the game would see eight lead changes as the Golden Eagles would head into the break with a four-point lead.
 
In the opening frame, the Golden Eagles held their opponent to 15-of-37 from the field, and only 4-of-10 from behind the arc. Charleston went 14-of-27 for a 51.9 percent mark from the field.
 
The Yellow Jackets went on a 16-4 run to start the second half gaining a 12-point lead nearing the midway point of the half. The Golden Eagles fought their way back in, gaining the 70-67 lead with 1:18 to play on a three-point play from Lamont McManus.
 
The game saw two more lead changes in the final minute of play, as a late turnover by the Golden Eagles allowed State to go up 74-72 with four seconds to play.
 
The Golden Eagles finished the game holding the Yellow Jackets to 26-of-66 from the field (39.4 percent) while forcing nine turnovers. Charleston converted on 44.4 percent of their attempts from the floor (25-of-54).

The Golden Eagles, who rank 3rd in Division II in field goal percentage, posted their lowest percentage from the floor on Sunday (44.4%) since their last loss on December 4th against Fairmont State when they shot the ball 43.5% from the field.

Scouting the Opponent:
Frostburg State comes into the contest holding a record of 7-11 (4-8 MEC) and has dropped four of their last five contests, most recently a 101-85 defeat to Fairmont State on Sunday. The Bobcats have played a road heavy schedule this year, with 14 of their first 18 games being played away from home. Frostburg State is led offensively by Daniel Alexander, who averaged 22.0 points and 7.3 rebounds per contest. On December 7th, Charleston held Alexander to a 16-point effort where he collected seven rebounds. The next closest Bobcat, Joe Adedayo, averages 11.4 points per contest and is, along with Alexander, one of two Frostburg State players to average double figure scoring with at least 15 games played this season. 

Things to Know for Wednesday:
  1. Charleston, who averages 83.7 points per contest (41st in Division II), scored a season-high 107-points against the Bobcats in their last time out on December 7th led by a career-high 28-point 15 rebound performance from freshman Eddie Colbert III.
  2. The Golden Eagles rank 5th in Division II in rebound margin (9.9) and grabbed their largest number of rebounds against Frostburg State (46) on December 7th, out-rebounding the opposition by 23.
  3. In 18 games this season, Frostburg State has averaged 21.3 attempts from three-point range. On December 7th, the Bobcats hit 10-of-28 shots from beyond the arc, a season-high total.
Matchup History: 
Because this is Frostburg State's first season as a member of Division II, the Golden Eagles have squared off with the opposition just once on December 7th of this season. The Golden Eagles won the matchup, as mentioned, scoring their largest number of points to date this season. Four Charleston players reached double figure scoring with two other players tallying nine points.

Women's Basketball Outlook:
The University of Charleston Golden Eagles Women's Basketball team (14-4, 9-3 MEC), won their second straight game on Sunday with a convincing 99-68 victory over crosstown rival West Virginia State on Sunday afternoon.  The Golden Eagles were led by Anna Hayton who notched 29 points and 14 rebounds while tallying two blocks. Three other Golden Eagles reached double figure scoring including 26 points from Dakota Reeves, who finished 8-of-16 from beyond the three point arc.

After the Yellow Jackets scored the opening bucket of the game, the Golden Eagles exploded on a 12-0 run over the next three minutes of play. With Charleston leading 18-12 with 3:32 remaining in the quarter, Charleston used a 6-0 run to double their lead at a score of 24-12. The teams exchanged buckets over the final minutes of the first quarter as UC carried a 31-18 lead headed into the second.
 
The second quarter played even between the teams through the first seven minutes before the Golden Eagles increased their lead to 21 on a pair of buckets from Taliyah Hopkins. The Yellow Jackets cut into the Charleston lead before halftime as UC led 50-34 at the break.
 
In the first half, the Golden Eagles converted on 16-of-29, good for 55.2%. In addition, Charleston converted on 6-of-11 attempts from beyond the arc. The Yellow Jackets converted on 12-of-27 attempts from the floor in the first half and made five of their 13 attempts from three-point range.
 
The Golden Eagles maintained their lead through the third quarter and had their best quarter of shooting, making 10-of-14 shots from the floor for 71.4%. Charleston outscored the opposition 28-14 in the quarter led by Hayton, who scored 12 in the quarter.
 
The fourth quarter played evenly between the teams as the Golden Eagles outscored the Yellow Jackets 21-19 in the quarter. The largest lead of the game came with the Golden Eagles ahead by 38 points (99-61) largely due to the rebounding efforts of the Golden Eagles, who took eight more in the quarter than West Virginia State.

Following Sunday's win, the Golden Eagles moved one game behind first place leaders Notre Dame and Glenville State in the Mountain East Conference standings after the Falcons fell at home to Urbana. In addition, the Golden Eagles come into Wednesday ranked 18th in Division II in scoring offense and 16th in field goal percentage (46.5). On Sunday, the Golden Eagles held WVSU, who ranks 3rd in Division II in scoring offense, to their second lowest scoring mark of the season.

Scouting the Opponent:
Frostburg State comes into the contest holding a record of 3-15 (2-10 MEC). The Bobcats have dropped five of their last six contests including a 92-70 defeat to Fairmont State on Sunday afternoon. Offensively, the Bobcats have two players averaging double figure scoring this season in Amanda Emory and Victoria Diggs. The only two players to start all 18 games this season, Emory and Diggs have averaged 14.3 and 13.2 points per contest respectively. The women have also played, like the men, just four of their first 18 games at home this season.
 
Things to Know for Wednesday:
  1. The Golden Eagles held the Bobcats to their lowest rebounding effort of the season (28) in their last matchup on December 7th. The Bobcat's next lowest rebounding game was 31 and the Bobcats, on average, grabs 39.5 rebounds per contest.
  2. Charleston posted their best shooting game of the season last time out against the Bobcats, converting on 37-of-58 shots from the floor (63.8%). Where UC on average makes 46.5% of their shots, Frostburg State on average holds opponents to 42.9% from the field.
  3. Through their first eight games of the season before December 7th, Frostburg State had a negative 5.1-scoring margin. In their last contest, Charleston outscored the Bobcats by 43-points, their second largest margin of victory this season.
Matchup History:
 
In their lone matchup, the Golden Eagles defeated the Bobcats at the Wehrle Innovation Center by a score of 99-56 this season. Charleston saw Hayton tie a season-high with 30 points in the victory.
