Meritorious Service

Dr. Janet Welch has served as the first lady of the University of Charleston since 1989, and during that time has been widely recognized as a faithful supporter and encourager of numerous UC coaches and student athletes. She is a familiar figure at men’s and women’s Golden Eagle basketball games and is also recognized by the UC volleyball team as the “seventh woman” for seldom missing a home match.

The Sissonville, W.Va., native has been given much of the credit for the improved appearance of the campus over the years. Dr. Welch has worked on color schemes, wall adornments, and physical layouts in many parts of the campus. She has put art in hallways, offices, and the library, and single-handedly created the, Erma Byrd West Virginia Women Artists Gallery. It is the only gallery of its kind in the United States and has received great acclaim from the artistic community.

Dr. Welch is the University’s official campus hostess. From athletic events to student receptions to Tower Room dinners, she is there to represent UC and welcome guests. This includes serving as a gracious hostess at countless athletic-related banquets and events, including welcoming guests to the Skybox at UC Stadium for every home football game since it opened in 2005.
