Cochren, a 1987 University of Charleston graduate, was inducted into the Golden Eagle Sports Hall of Fame in 2004. 

He transferred to the University of Charleston for tennis in 1986 and for the two years he attended he was a letter winner. He was captain for the team, named WVIAC All-Conference twice and his Golden Eagles team made two NAIA National Tournament appearances.

After playing for University of Charleston, Cochren returned to coach the Golden Eagles. From 1990-97, Cochren’s teams won 144 consecutive WVIAC matches; eight consecutive WVIAC titles; participated in eight consecutive National Championships. 
 
Cochren coached 74 WVIAC Conference champions and a record of five WVIAC Players of the Year. At one time, Cochren helped coach two-time All-American and Huntington native Jeff Morrison (University of Florida), who finished #1 in singles in D-I. Morrison went on to play professional tennis.
